Preventative measures:
- Keep well hydrated and mobilise frequently during flights, long train and car journeys and avoid the use of sedatives and the consumption of alcohol during travel.
- For journeys longer than four hours, should be considered for thromboprophylaxis with low-molecular weight Heparin (Tinzaparin
4,500 units). This should be administered two to four hours before the journey and the same would apply for the return journey.
For journeys longer than 12 hours, a second injection should be administered 24 hours after the first injection on both occasions.
- During hospitalisation and at other times of prolonged immobilisation, should be considered for thromboprophylaxis with low-molecular weight Heparin. This can be continued beyond discharge until fully mobile again. (not to exceed 42 days).
- After surgical procedures should be considered for a minimum of 7 days prophylaxis with LMWH, 14 days for orthopaedic procedures. This should be continued beyond discharge until fully mobile again.(not to exceed 42 days).
- Ostrogen containing products such as the combined oral contraceptive pill and oral hormone replacement therapy should be avoided.
